Fighting the good fight
Now that Air America is up and running and doing very well, it is nice to see more and more liberal talk radio shows springing up all over the country. Be sure to support these folks as they take the fight to the conservatives on their own turf. One such show is Bruce's 'liberal voice of America' show. He E-mailed me today and I thought I would share with you his efforts to keep the radio waves fair and balanced. He is on the same station as Sean Hannity. Go bruce! So tune in to KABC 790am throughout Southern California and listen for Bruce, who is doing fill in work. Check him out online for updates on his air times..
Also be sure to check out his '154 Reasons to Toss george W. Bush'

Well I have added a new page to this site and it will be dedicated to the economy. It seems that the economy, much to the SCEP's (So Called Elected President) chagrin, is the number one issue for voters in this election. This is bad news for Bush because, lets be frank here, the Bush economy sucks. Right now the economy page is mostly graphs and charts but over the days I will be adding useful links as well. Besides I know how we all love to look at pictures.

Connect the dots. A list of bad news for bush and the following terror alerts
(Note this is only a portion. The rest is found here)
Also take a look at this graph that shows Bush approval ratings, and the terror alerts. Notice how the lower the ratings go the more frequent the alerts.
January
10, 2002 - George W. Bush, answering reporters' questions in the
Oval Office regarding his close relationship with Ken Lay.
February 5, 2002 - Angry lawmakers to subpoena Ken Lay over Enron

February
12, 2002 - Attorney General John Ashcroft on Tuesday called on "all
Americans to be on the highest state of alert" after an FBI
warning of a possible imminent terrorist attack.

May 22, 2002 -- Bush goes on the record as opposing the formation

Same day:
The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee votes to issue subpoenas
to the Bush administration for information on its contacts with

We
are turning a corner
"When it comes to improving our economy and creating jobs,
results matter"
- Bush
Yes Bush they do. So where are the results? The
job numbers released today show a measly 32,000 jobs. That is
a far cry from the 306,000 jobs Bush
claimed his stimulus would bring. One tenth to be exact. And
we all know how good this administration and the SCEP (So
Called Elected President) are at predicting
jobs.
The anointed appointed one will have to do better than that. After all, results matter.

Swift Boat Veterans for Truth did not serve alongside Kerry
In the new ad, members of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth claim that they "served with John Kerry." Hannity & Colmes co-host Sean Hannity echoed the false claim, saying that the veterans in the ad are "the people that know him best."
While the veterans attacking Kerry in the ad are veterans of the Vietnam War and may have served at the same time as Kerry, as The New York Times reported on August 5, the Kerry campaign noted that "none of the men had actually served on the Swift boats that Mr. Kerry commanded." Adm. Roy F. Hoffman, one of the veterans in the ad, has even "acknowledged he had no first-hand knowledge to discredit Kerry's claims to valor," the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on May 7, "and said that although Kerry was under his command, he really didn't know Kerry much personally."
Swift Boat Veterans for Truth's Republican ties
As Media Matters for America previously noted, on May 4, Salon.com's Joe Conason detailed Swift Boat Veterans for Truth's ties to the Republican Party. In addition to pointing out that the group's founder, John O'Neill, has long-standing ties to the GOP that can be traced back to the Nixon administration, Conason also reported that among the people behind Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is "veteran corporate media consultant and Texas Republican activist Merrie Spaeth, who is listed as the group's media contact."
Swift Boat Veterans for Truth doctor did not sign Kerry's medical record
Neither Hannity nor Scarborough bothered to note that Dr. Louis Letson, who is featured in the ad claiming to have treated Kerry for the wound that earned him his first Purple Heart and claiming that it was undeserved, was not the medical official who signed Kerry's medical records for the wound. The Kerry campaign noted this fact in a report in The New York Times and a report in the Los Angeles Times that surfaced when Letson first unleashed this attack in May.

The
meme is dead. Long live the meme.
One of the big memes circulating among the GOP is that Kerry is too
inexperienced to be the president. They then go on to cite Kerry's record
in the senate and his number of bills passed as proof of this.
well lets run the numbers shall we?
| legislator | years in congress | bills passed | bills per year |
| Cheney | 11 | 2 | .19 |
| Kerry | 25 | 57 | 2.28 |
In the "rapid fire" section of Crossfire she said the following to a Republican Strategist...
"Dick Cheney was in the house for over a decade. How many bills did he pass?"
The Republican Strategist paused, looked physically ill, then tried to change the subject by saying "Well, he was acknowledged as a leader."
There was laughter in the crowd.
But Brazille didn't let him go. She leaned forward and very calmly told the truth.
"2 bills".
2 bills for Cheney. 57 for Kerry.

CNN had a report on this 'new' terror threat 2 years ago. Don't believe the hype for one second that this weeks terror threat, the day after the Democratic convention is anything but politics.
Sources: al Qaeda linked to bank threat
The FBI announced Friday that the government has received a new, unsubstantiated terrorist threat against U.S. financial institutions -- a threat, sources said, that was to be carried out by al Qaeda operatives.
"Unspecified terrorists are considering physical attacks against U.S. financial institutions in the Northeast, particularly banks, as part of their campaign against U.S. financial interests," the FBI said.
And if there is any doubt that Ridge is playing politics check out this disgusting statement:
"We must understand that the kind of information available to us today is the result of the president's leadership in the war against terror,"
They are playing politics with our national security!

What
recovery?
I am sick and tired of hearing Bush go on and on about this wonderful
economic 'recovery' that we are supposedly experiencing. Tired of hearing
about how fast the growth is going.
I
put it this way. let's say you have a hill 20 feet high. then a few
years later some guy, let's call him "W", bulldozes the mountain
and in it's place he digs a hole 15 feet deep. Then after a while he
quickly throws 2 feet of dirt back into the hole. Can it be said that
the hole is being filled? Sure. Can it be said it is filling at a pace
faster than it was before he threw the dirt in? Of course. Is the hole
as high as the mountain? NO.
This is the slippery slope the Bush team is working. They are bending,
twisting and spinning so fast it makes me dizzy. But nothing they say
can get me to believe that Bush is anything but one of the worst economic
presidents in history. Period.
Now because sometimes these concepts are hard for folks on the other
side of the isle to comprehend, I make this point in a pretty animated
picture.
Check it out and
pass it on (error fixed. thanks Joel)

For months I have been saying that come November there will be no issue more important than this. The word 'Diebold' will be known by all, and unless people wake up, the word is nothing but trouble. The following article is a MUST READ for all people who want to see a fair election.
How They Could Steal the Election This Time
On November 2 millions of Americans will cast their votes for President in computerized voting systems that can be rigged by corporate or local-election insiders. Some 98 million citizens, five out of every six of the roughly 115 million who will go to the polls, will consign their votes into computers that unidentified computer programmers, working in the main for four private corporations and the officials of 10,500 election jurisdictions, could program to invisibly falsify the outcomes.
The result could be the failure of an American presidential election and its collapse into suspicions, accusations and a civic fury that will make Florida 2000 seem like a family spat in the kitchen. Robert Reich, Bill Clinton's Labor Secretary, has written, "Automated voting machines will be easily rigged, with no paper trails to document abuses." Senator John Kerry told Florida Democrats last March, "I don't think we ought to have any vote cast in America that cannot be traced and properly recounted." Pointing out in a recent speech at the NAACP convention that "a million African-Americans were disenfranchised in the last election," Kerry says his campaign is readying 2,000 lawyers to "challenge any place in America where you cannot trace the vote and count the votes".

But we must understand that the kind of information available to us today is the result of the president's leadership in the war against terror, the reports that have led to this alert are the result of offensive intelligence and military operations overseas, as well as strong partnerships with our allies around the world, such as Pakistan.

Before this speech I was anti-Bush. After that speech I am pro-Kerry!
Kerry
although still a bit f a stiff speaker, and still needs to work on those
applause breaks, rose up to meet this challenge. He really needed to
shine and he did much better than I was expecting.
He effectively countered every single one of Bush's negative attacks
all in one sweep. He was much more aggressive than I thought he would
be. It is if they toned down all the speeches in the days before and
then unleashed Kerry to do the most effective attacking, taking the
fight directly to Bush. It was a brilliant move. Anyone who thinks this
campaign is not being run effectively after this speech just is not
paying attention.
He also brilliantly spoke directly to bush and challenged him to run
a positive campaign with out the negative attacks Bush is dependent
on. Bush has nothing to run on so the negative attacks are a must. By
challenging Bush to rise above such attacks he is setting Bush up to
fail. And calling attention to that failure. Brilliant.
Below are links to the entire speech, as well as a link to some highlights.

Imagine that!
back on 7/7/04, I reported, as did many others the follwing story:
Screw October! Let's have a July Surprise!
A third source, an official who works under ISI's director, Lieutenant General Ehsan ul-Haq, informed tnr that the Pakistanis "have been told at every level that apprehension or killing of High Value Targets before [the] election is [an] absolute must." What's more, this source claims that Bush administration officials have told their Pakistani counterparts they have a date in mind for announcing this achievement: "The last ten days of July deadline has been given repeatedly by visitors to Islamabad and during [ul-Haq's] meetings in Washington." Says McCormack: "I'm aware of no such comment." But according to this ISI official, a White House aide told ul-Haq last spring that "it would be best if the arrest or killing of [any] HVT were announced on twenty-six, twenty-seven, or twenty-eight July"--the first three days of the Democratic National Convention in Boston.
Imagine my surprise when I read on CNN today:
Pakistan captures high-level al Qaeda operative
Pakistani security forces have captured a high-level al Qaeda operative who was on the FBI's most-wanted terrorist list in connection with the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Africa, Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat said Thursday.
Hayat said Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, who the FBI lists on its Web site as being born in Zanzibar, Tanzania, was captured in a raid in central Pakistan "a few days back."
The FBI said on its Web site that the Rewards for Justice Program is offering a reward of "up to $25 million" for information that leads to Ghailani's capture.
Send this sham story to your friends and help us deflate some of the punch they were hoping to get. This is a transparent attempt to divert attention from Kerry. Don't let them do it!
UPDATE: I note that the CNN article mentions that this capture happened on Sunday. They chose to announce it 5 hours before Kerry speaks to the nation. This is a game ot them. It makes me sick.

Dropping
the Obama on ya
Before last night not many people had heard of Barack Obama. Now this
morning people are saying that he will be the first black president
of the United States of America. And you know what? I believe it. That
is how powerful this speech was. He makes you believe. He inspires you
in ways that we all need to be inspired. The speech was effortless.
It was awesome. The people on the right are sputtering and stammering
in an attempt to find some way to spin this speech in a negative way.
It was so positive and uplifting the pundits are blowing a fuse trying
to figure out how to taint this man. At one point in the speech, as
if he knows how they will attempt to spin his positive message in a
poor light he speaks directly to them:
Yet even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters, and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal American and a conservative America -- there's the United States of America. There's not a black America and a white America -- there's the United States of America. The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States [...] but I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the Blue States and have gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported it. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.
Awesome.
If you missed the speech you can view
it right here (quicktime required). You can read
the speech right here.
This man is what our party is all about. He is a wonderful rising star and
I look forward to seeing him shine in the years to come. Watching him I
was thinking how every other phrase to come out of his mouth was a bumper
sticker in the making. "The audacity of hope." After the speech
I felt wonderful. Full of hope. Of course because I am a glutton for punishment,
as soon as the speech was done I flipped on Faux News, to totally dash any
sense of positivity I had gained.

I'm a little verklempt
3 amazing speeches last night. Gore and Clinton both hit home runs, but the one that stayed with me was Carter. Man, what a man of peace he is! Surprisingly while most expected Gore and Dean to do the attacking, Gore's speech was rather timid, although very powerful. It was Carter, the gentle man himself, who had the most scathing things to say about Bush. But one part of his speech stayed with me. Because he said, almost word for word, something I have said many times. It's about hope:
"... in many ways the last few months have been some of the most disturbing of all. But I am not discouraged. I do not despair for our country. I believe tonight, as I always have, that the essential decency, compassion and common sense of the American people will prevail."
Can you hand me a tissue please? I have said those exact words to my fiance and many others. It was weird to hear someone else say it, yet it feels good to know I am not the only one who believes in the goodness of people and the hope for our country.

Michael Moore, and O'Reilly Duke it out
Moore at last goes on O'Reilly's show. There were several rules in place before Moore would agree to go on with him. No cut off mike, No editing the footage, they each get to ask a few questions etc. Here is a snippit taken from show:
Moore: That's fair, we'll just stick to the issues
O'Reilly: The issues... alright good, now, one of the issues is you because you've been calling Bush a liar on weapons of mass destruction, the senate intelligence committee, Lord Butler's investigation in Britain, and now the 911 Commission have all come out and said there was no lying on the part of President Bush. Plus, Gladimir Putin has said his intelligence told Bush there were weapons of mass destruction. Wanna apologize to the president now or later?
Moore: He didn't tell the truth, he said there were weapons of mass destruction.
O: Yeah, but he didn't lie, he was misinformed by - all of those investigations come to the same conclusion, that's not a lie.
M: uh huh, so in other words if I told you right now that nothing was going on down here on the stage...
O: That would be a lie because we could see that wasn't the truth
M: Well, I'd have to turn around to see it, and then I would realize, oh, Bill, I just told you something that wasn't true... actually it's president Bush that needs to apologize to the nation for telling an entire country that there were weapons of mass destruction, that they had evidence of this, and that there was some sort of connection between Saddam Hussein and September 11th, and he used that as a -
O: Ok, He never said that, but back to the other thing, if you, if Michael Moore is president -
M: I thought you said you saw the movie, I show all that in the movie
O: Which may happen if Hollywood, yeah, OK, fine -
M: But that was your question -
O: Just the issues. You've got three separate investigations plus the president of Russia all saying... British intelligence, US intelligence, Russian intelligence, told the president there were weapons of mass destruction, you say, "he lied." This is not a lie if you believe it to be true, now he may have made a mistake, which is obvious -
M: Well, that's almost pathological - I mean, many criminals believe what they say is true, they could pass a lie detector test -
O: Alright, now you're dancing around a question -
M: No I'm not, there's no dancing
O: He didn't lie
M: He said something that wasn't true
O: Based upon bad information given to him by legitimate sources
M: Now you know that they went to the CIA, Cheney went to the CIA, they wanted that information, they wouldn't listen to anybody
The rest can be viwed here. It pains me to link to the Drudge Report, but alas he seems to have the transcript up before anyone else. be sure to read it. The best part is where Moore gets O'Reilly to sign up to go serve in Falujah. Kidding. Sort of.

"If
we had known an attack was coming against the United States...we would have
moved heaven and earth to stop it."
- George W. Bush
Excerpts
from the 911 commission report Chapter
8 (PDF) of the Report, "The System Was Blinking Red,"
As 2001 began, counterterrorism officials were having frequent but fragmentary
reports about threats. Indeed, there appeared to be possible threats almost
anywhere the United States had interests - including at home.
In spring of 2001, the level of reporting on terrorist threats and planned
attacks increased dramatically to its highest level since the millennium
alert.
On March 23, Richard Clarke told National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice
that he thought there were terrorist cells within the United States, including
al Qaeda.
The next day [April 20], a briefing to top officials reported "Bin
Ladin planning multiple operations."
In May 2001, A report goes out to top officials that "Bin Laden
public profile may presage attack" and "Bin Laden network's
plans advancing."
In early May, a walk-in to the FBI claimed there was a plan to launch attacks
on London, Boston, and New York.
The next day brought a report that a phone call to a U.S. embassy had warned
that Bin Laden supporters were planning an attack in the United States with
"high explosives."
On May 17, based on the previous day's report, the first item on the CSG's
agenda was "UBL: Operation Planned in U.S."
On June 25, Clarke warned Rice and Hadley that six separate intelligence
reports showed al Qaeda personnel warning of a pending attack.
On June 28, Clarke warned Rice that the patternof al Qaeda activity indicating
attack planning over the past six weeks "had reached a crescendo."
"A series of new reports continue to convince me and analysts at State,
CIA, DIA, and NSA that a major terrorist attack or series of attacks is
likely in July," he noted. One al Qaeda intelligence report warned
that something "very, very, very, very" big was about to happen,
and most of Bin Ladin's network was reportedly anticipating the attack.
The headline of a June 30 briefing to top officials was stark: "Bin
Ladin Planning High-Profile Attacks."
On July 23, the lead item for CSG discussion was still the al Qaeda threat,
and it included mention of suspected terrorist travel to the United States.
By late July, Tenet said, it could not "get any worse." On June
30, the SEIB (The Senior Executive Intelligence Brief) contained an article
titled "Bin Ladin Threats Are Real." Yet Hadley told Tenet
in July that Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz questioned the reporting.
Bush recieves the August 6 Presidential Daily Brief titled "Bin
Ladin Determined to Strike in US."
It was the 36th PDB item briefed so far that year
that related to Bin Ladin or al Qaeda, and the first devoted to the possibility
of an attack in the United States.
Most of the intelligence community recognized in the summer of 2001 that
the number and severity of threat reports were unprecedented. Many officials
told us that they knew something terrible was planned, and they were desperate
to stop it.

If only we had been warned indeed.....

God bless you Helen Thomas
Thomas:
Prime Minister Blair took full personal responsibility for taking his nation
into war under falsehoods -- under reasons that have been determined
now to be false. Is President Bush also willing to take full, personal
responsibility --
McClellan: I think Prime Minister Blair said that it was the right
thing to do; that Saddam Hussein's regime was a threat.
Thomas: Those were not the reasons he took
his country into war. It turned out to be untrue, and the same is true for
us. Does the President take full, personal responsibility for this
war?
McClellan: The issue here is what do you to with a threat in a post-September
11th world? Either you live with a threat, or you confront the threat.
Thomas: There was no threat.
McClellan: The President made the decision to confront the threat.
Thomas: Saddam Hussein did not threaten this
country.
McClellan: The world -- the world, the Congress and the administration
all disagree. They all recognized that there was a threat posed
by Saddam Hussein. When it came to September 11th, that changed the equation.
It taught us, as I said --
Thomas: The Intelligence Committee said there
was no threat.
McClellan: As I said, it taught us that we must confront threats before
it's too late.
Helen Thomas: So the President doesn't take
full responsibility?

Aladdin
expels Ronstadt after political remarks
Aladdin President Bill Timmins ordered security guards to escort pop diva Linda Ronstadt off the property following a concert Saturday night during which she expressed support for controversial documentary filmmaker Michael Moore.
Timmins, who was among the almost 5,000 fans in the audience at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts, had Ronstadt escorted to her tour bus and her belongings from her hotel room sent to her. Timmins also sent word to Ronstadt that she was no longer welcome at the property for future performances, according Aladdin spokeswoman Tyri Squyres.
Near the close of her performance, Ronstadt dedicated the Eagles hit "Desperado" to Moore, producer of "Fahrenheit 9/11," and the room erupted into equal parts boos and cheers. She said Moore "is someone who cares about this country deeply and is trying to help."
Hundreds of angry fans streamed from the theater as Ronstadt sang. Some of them reportedly defaced posters of her in the lobby, writing comments and tossing drinks on her pictures.
I understand from the news reports I've read that, after Linda Ronstadt, one of America's greatest singers, dedicated a song to me from your stage on Saturday night, you instructed your security guards to remove her from the Aladdin, which they did.
What country do you live in? Last time I checked, Las Vegas is still in the United States. And in the United States, we have something called "The First Amendment." This constitutional right gives everyone here the right to say whatever they want to say. All Americans hold this right as sacred ....
Of all the things that go on in Las Vegas, this is what creates the need for serious action? What about the other half of the crowd at the Aladdin who, according to the Las Vegas Sun, cheered her when she made her remarks? Did you throw them out, too?
I think you owe Ms. Ronstadt an apology. And I have an idea how you can make it up to her -- and to the millions of Americans you have offended. Invite her back and I'll join her in singing "America the Beautiful" on your stage. Then I will show "Fahrenheit 9/11" free of charge to all your guests and anyone else in Las Vegas who wants to see it.

The 900 mark
900 young men and women sent to a country to die for a lie. 900 families asking why. 900 lives spent effortlessly by our government. All for a lie. Don't mince words. Don't sugar coat it. The dead deserve your anger. Question authority. Demand answers. As the president sets his eyes on Iran remember how willingly they sent our youth off to die. Remember that these troops are more than willing to be sent off to defend what they believe in. They were given the order and they did the job. All they ask, is that they are not sent overseas to represent America, for in the name of deceit.

Here we go again
With
all the criticism over the intelligence that brought us into the war in
Iraq, I feel good knowing that it won't be as easy to sell the American
people an unjust war this time around. Or so we hope. Because Bush is sure
to try to do just that.
Fool me once, shame on, shame on me... Fool me, we can't get fooled again.
President Bush said Monday the United States is exploring whether Iran had any role in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, a scenario discounted by the CIA.
"We're digging into the facts to see if there was one," Bush said in an Oval Office photo opportunity. Bush noted that acting CIA Director John McLaughlin has said that there was no direct connection between Iran and Sept. 11.
"We will continue to look and see if the Iranians were involved," Bush said. "I have long expressed my concerns about Iran. After all it's a totalitarian society where people are not allowed to exercise their rights as human beings."

cheney announces he is keeping Bush
Vice President Dick Cheney says rumors aside, he's not dropping out of the race.
President Bush has been "very clear he doesn't want to break up the team," Cheney said in a C-SPAN interview that will be broadcast Sunday.
There has been persistent speculation that Cheney would step down for political or health reasons.
"He's made his decision," Cheney said of Bush. "I've made mine. I suppose right now, because we're in the run up to the convention, people don't have much to talk about so you get speculation on that. It's normal. When we get to the convention, I think that'll put an end to it."

Movies
and the election
I have been thinking, aren't the Oscars some time in November or December??
They may not come in time to be placed BEFORE the election but the proximity
is interesting indeed. I am, of course, talking about Fahrenheit 911. Best Documentary
award? For sure. Best picture? Now your talking! Oh how that would piss the
GOP off! There is no doubt that this is an important film. I would go as far
as to say it is historic. But is it eligible? Heres and interesting article
about that.
Documenting Moore's Oscar Chances
The current spotlight on documentaries, particularly those of the political persuasion, means more movie fans than usual are likely to pay attention to the Best Documentary Feature category during the 77th Academy Awards.
But a quirky rule that declares ineligible any documentary distributed on television or the Internet during the nine months after its theatrical release could leave some gaps in the potential nominees.

The beginning of the end
So the day after the Edwards pick, we get a terror warning from Tom Ridge. (Boooo!) Nothing specific of course. Boy they must be really worried they are going to lose this election. The Democratic ticket is strong and offers a tangible alternative to the lies and fear we have been force fed for he last few years. But will those in the white house let that power be taken away? We shall see. More and more I get the sense that the next few months will be a historic time for our Nation. This will be the stuff our children ask us about. Stories that were first making the rounds on blogs and other internet sites are being taken up by major media. Things that sounded far fetched only a few months back are becoming a grim possibility. Which brings me to this story. If Bushco and friends think they will lose, will they attempt to delay the election?
Exclusive: Election Day Worries
July 19 issue - American counterterrorism officials, citing what they call "alarming" intelligence about a possible Qaeda strike inside the United States this fall, are reviewing a proposal that could allow for the postponement of the November presidential election in the event of such an attack, NEWSWEEK has learned.
The prospect that Al Qaeda might seek to disrupt the U.S. election was a major factor behind last week's terror warning by Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge. Ridge and other counterterrorism officials concede they have no intel about any specific plots. But the success of March's Madrid railway bombings in influencing the Spanish electionsas well as intercepted "chatter" among Qaeda operativeshas led analysts to conclude "they want to interfere with the elections," says one official.
The
rest...
Yahoo
News has the story as well
No
specific threat. But we can delay the election. Hmmmm it seems they are right
and there is a group out there with a dark plan. And "they want to interfere
with the elections." Yes and that group is NOT Al Queda.
Spread this around. The more people who hear about this the easier it will be
to call them on they're shenanigans.

Did Bush let 9/11 happen?
Did he let those 3,000 people die so he could wage an endless war on terror? Wars that would allow him to get a foothold in the Middle East, just like they Planned in the PNAC in the 90's? Is the government using terror alerts and terrorist attacks, to create a fearful public who will not question any desire of the government to flex its super power muscle?
Sound far fetched? Sound like a scrapped script for an X-Files episode? Try doing a google search for "Operation Northwoods." These concepts are not new. These ideas are not crazy. They planned it before.
Code named Operation Northwoods, the plans reportedly included the possible assassination of Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugees on the high seas, hijacking planes, blowing up a U.S. ship, and even orchestrating violent terrorism in U.S. cities.
The plans were developed as ways to trick the American public and the international community into supporting a war to oust Cuba's then new leader, communist Fidel Castro.
America's top military brass even contemplated causing U.S. military casualties, writing: "We could blow up a U.S. ship in Guantanamo Bay and blame Cuba," and, "casualty lists in U.S. newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation."

I
have said many times that Bush just can't seem to catch a break.
Well
looks like he is getting one. And it's a doozy. You see Bush is adamant to show
his honor and courage and his 'military recor' is a great way to go about doing
that. Of course Bush specified on his paper work that he did NOT
want to be sent to Vietnam, but let us not focus on that trivial tidbit. But
Bush will release records that will prove he was not AWOL during his service
with the Texas Air National Guard. But what's this!? The
New York Times story is saying that those record were destroyed. Ooops!
Military records that could help establish President Bush's whereabouts during his disputed service in the Texas Air National Guard more than 30 years ago have been inadvertently destroyed, according to the Pentagon.
It said the payroll records of "numerous service members," including former First Lt. Bush, had been ruined in 1996 and 1997 by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service during a project to salvage deteriorating microfilm. No back-up paper copies could be found, it added in notices dated June 25.
Well that is a disaster! If the records were destroyed how will Bush prove he was not AWOL? Well thankfully the dog that ate this homework had a very selective appetite
The destroyed records cover three months of a period in 1972 and 1973 when Mr. Bush's claims of service in Alabama are in question.
Amazing. And very convenient. Read the article.

Well
lots of fun news stories today that are just making me all warm inside.
My local
paper this morning lead with a heart warming story of Nader's attempt to get
his name on some state ballots. So far no luck with that. Imagine my disapointment.
But the real fun began when the story jumps into the part where 1 in 10 of Nader's
financial donators are also donating large sums to the Republican Party. What!?
Say it isn't so! Nader a man of such high integrity would never stand for such
a thing would he? Oh he would.
"..financial records show that $23,000 in checks of $1,000 or more have come from loyal Republicans. Among those who have given recently to Nader are Houston businessman Nijad Fares, who donated $200,000 to President Bush's 2000 inaugural committee; Richard J. Egan, the former ambassador to Ireland, and his wife, Pamela, who have raised more than $300,000 for Bush; Michigan developer Ghassan Saab, who has given $30,000 to the RNC since 2001; and frozen food magnate Jeno Paulucci, and his wife, Lois, who have donated $150, 000 to GOP causes since 2000 alone..."
Read
all about it here.
As I moved on to my favorite source of news, the internet, I found another Nader
story. This one about how Michigan Republicans are helping to gather signatures
to Place the Nadermeister on the ballot in that battleground state.
"..Greg McNeilly of the state Republican Party said the GOP is doing nothing wrong and hopes Nader will draw votes from the Democratic candidate. Republicans will make sure Nader has more than the 30,000 valid signatures he needs by July 15 to qualify for the Michigan ballot, McNeilly said.
"Unlike the Democratic Party, where 'D' stands for disenfranchisement, we want voters to have choices,'' he said.."
How
touching. This must be that compassionate conservativism I have heard about.
Full
story right here.
More proof that the Bush team really doesn't have anything to run on. The best thing they can do is bring Kerry's numbers down by helping nader and a relentless stream of negative campaign ads attempting to tarnish the image of Kerry.

Screw October! Let's have a July Surprise!
A third source, an official who works under ISI's director, Lieutenant General Ehsan ul-Haq, informed tnr that the Pakistanis "have been told at every level that apprehension or killing of HVTs before [the] election is [an] absolute must." What's more, this source claims that Bush administration officials have told their Pakistani counterparts they have a date in mind for announcing this achievement: "The last ten days of July deadline has been given repeatedly by visitors to Islamabad and during [ul-Haq's] meetings in Washington." Says McCormack: "I'm aware of no such comment." But according to this ISI official, a White House aide told ul-Haq last spring that "it would be best if the arrest or killing of [any] HVT were announced on twenty-six, twenty-seven, or twenty-eight July"--the first three days of the Democratic National Convention in Boston.

Things just got a little bit more interesting. Bush's busom buddy, Ken Lay, just fell out of the frying pan and into the fire:
Sources: Lay Indicted in Enron's Collapse
Kenneth Lay, the former Enron Corp. chief executive who insisted he knew nothing about financial fraud at the energy trading giant, has been indicted on criminal charges, sources told The Associated Press on Wednesday.Combine this with F911, the expected Edwards boost, the expected National Convention boost, the Plame investigation about to explode, and say 11 other assorted scandals and it looks like no fun for Bush!
The action caps a three-year investigation that has already seen several other executives charged and, in some cases, already sentenced to prison for their roles in the company's scandalous collapse. Lay was expected to surrender to federal authorities Thursday, said the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity. The specific charges remained under seal.

Iraq gets fraction of US aid billions
The US government spent just 2% of the $18.4bn (£10bn) it had obtained from Congress for the urgent reconstruction of Iraq before formally ending its occupation last week.
The White House budget office report, the first detailed audit of the reconstruction, showed that the US occupation authorities had spent nothing on healthcare or water and sanitation, two of the most urgent needs for Iraqis. In contrast, a total of $9m was spent on administrative expenses.
By June 22 America's reconstruction campaign had spent $366m of the sum allotted to the Iraq Relief and Reconstruction Fund.

So the GOP has begun to attack Edwards and the most often used criticism seems to be a lack of experience. Well Kos puts this matter to rest rather effectively:
The most-oft repeated criticism of Edwards is that he "doesn't have experience". We'll, E.J. Dionne shares this moment from 2000:
When you hear Republicans disparage Sen. John Edwards's lack of experience, remember the words of Sen. Orrin Hatch, spoken to George W. Bush at a debate on Dec. 6, 1999.
"You've been a great governor," Hatch declared of his rival for the Republican presidential nomination. "My only problem with you, governor, is that you've only had four and going into your fifth year of governorship ... Frankly, I really believe that you need more experience before you become president of the United States. That's why I'm thinking of you as a vice presidential candidate."
Which is exactly what Edwards was chosen for yesterday.
And checkmate.

More lies from our Leaders. But what else is new?
Cheney Had No New Data on Saddam, Al Qaeda-Panel
The Sept. 11 commission, which reported no evidence of collaborative links between Iraq and al Qaeda, said on Tuesday that Vice President Dick Cheney had no more information than commission investigators to support his later assertions to the contrary.
The 10-member bipartisan panel investigating the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington said it reached its conclusion after reviewing available transcripts of Cheney's public remarks on the subject.
The vice president has asserted long-standing links between the former Iraqi president and Osama Bin Laden's Islamist militant network.
"The 9-11 Commission believes it has access to the same information the vice president has seen regarding contacts between al Qaeda and Iraq prior to the 9-11 attacks," the commission said in a statement.

It's official. Kerry made what I think is the wise choice and Picked Edwards as his running mate. Edwards had a good strong campaign message and can bring several southern states into play. A sigh of relief can be heard all across America as Democrats hear the news. Edwards will bring some much needed charisma to this ticket. So who is not happy to hear the news? Well you can just imagine the GOP is not to happy about this. Can you hear that? It's the sound of the smear machine putting it's sights on John Edwards. Who else is not excited? Well the New York Post thats who:

Kerry first made the announcment in an e-mail to his supporters
"I want you to know why I'm excited about running for president with John Edwards by my side. John understands and defends the values of America. He has shown courage and conviction as a champion for middle class Americans and those struggling to reach the middle class. In the Senate, he worked to reform our intelligence, to combat bioterrorism, and keep our military strong. John reaches across party lines and speaks to the heart of America -- hope and optimism. Throughout his own campaign for President, John spoke about the great divide in this country -- the "Two Americas" -- that exist between those who are doing well today and those that are struggling to make it from day to day. And I am so proud that we're going to build one America together."

Pampered Bush meets a real reporter
On the eve of his recent sojourn in Europe, President Bush had an unpleasant run-in with a species of creature he had not previously encountered often: a journalist.
He did not react well to the experience.
Bush's minders usually leave him in the gentle care of the White House press corps, which can be counted on to ask him tough questions about when his summer vacation starts.
Apparently under the mistaken assumption that reporters in the rest of the world are as ill-informed and pliable as the stenographers who "cover" the White House, Bush's aides scheduled a sit-down interview with Carole Coleman, Washington correspondent for RTE, the Irish public television network.

Fahrenheit 911 Review (Minor Spoilers)
Michael Moore is
a Mensch. A patriot in the truest sense of the word.
I had been anticipating this film for months and it was everything i was hoping
it would be. Moore presents the information in his usual comical way but the
subject is so serious it is quite a combination of emotions as you watch it
all unfold. It was much more emotionally intense than I had thought it was going
to be. Serious tear jerker potential here. Also there is some sequences of pretty
dramatic war footage. War is a horror to witness and Moore taps into that quite
a bit. The most graphic footage is bunched together so it is possible to close
your eyes and miss the rough stuff. But then you are missing the point. War
has consequences. And it is important to see an u-sanitized version of 'collateral
damage'.
The movie starts off with a surreal account of the 2000 election. Footage we
never saw of the congress presiding over the public outcry that followed the
election is awkward to watch since it is Gore himself who presided over the
session. An interesting and very dramatic sequence.
Michael moore, has been under intense scrutiny in past films has very little
on camera time. There are only a few instances where Michael Moore himself gets
on camera for his shenanigans. This time he lets the footage speak for itself.
And it does just that. This film will be so hard to discredit for just that
reason. How can you call Moore a liar for showing footage of Bush acting the
fool on camera? All Moore is doing is making this candid version of Bush public.
It is Bush's fault for saying these foolish things while cameras roll.
Michael Moore has gotten his hands on footage that Bush must have wished was
never shot. Very funny stuff. We see Bush candidly goofing off to the camera
moments before he sobers up and the cameras go live and he launches into his
sober speech to lead a country to war. Can similar footage most likely be found
of any politician if you go through enough films scraps? Sure. Are the points
he makes any less potent for knowing that? Not at all. Bush just needs to watch
his behavior when cameras roll. Consider it a free bit of advise from Moore
to the President.
Moore documents the connections between Bush family and the royal Saudi family
very well. He does not jump to conclusions, rather states facts that are a matter
of public record to make his point.
He also does a clever bit of his own detective work that is really quite thoughtful.
I wont go into details on that since it is a serious spoiler. lets just say
Moore had documents in hand that Bush and the white house most likely didn't
know he had.
The footage of Iraq is extremely intense. Here are kids not old enough to drink,
yet immersed in this war. They are growing up very fast out there. One trooper
recalls sending in a napalm strike and moments later watching citizens run out
of the area that was hit, some of them with parts of their face missing. Many
of them are quotes as saying they will no longer support bush after this war.
The sequence near the end following a mother and the experience she has had
sending a son off to war and hearing of his death is a tear jerker.
All in all the film was very powerful. Both extremely funny and sobering, it
is a bit overwhelming in the amount of information you are presented with, and
if I did not already know much of it, it could be a bit hard to retain.
People trying to debunk this film will have a much harder time of it than they
did with, say Bowling for columbine. Moore learned from that experience and
this time he simply lets the footage of bush do its job. You see bush and his
cabinet on film acting like you have never seen them. It's both comical and
sad.
The film is both informative and sobering. Is it biased? Hell yes. But all the
facts are there. He is not making anything up. Just putting in your face the
unfortunate sequence of events that have taken place over the last few years.
I believe the film will do well indeed. It is a powerful tool indeed and presented
at just the right moment. My hat goes off to Moore for this one.
We wont get fooled again.
Update: Just for giggles here is the official White House reponse to the film.
"Mr. Moore has every right to produce and show movies that express his very radical views. He's outside of the mainstream. ... This is a film that doesn't require us to actually view it to know it's filled with factual inaccuracies."
There it is, striaght from the top. You don't need to see the film, all lies, Al Queda = Saddam, we know where the WMD are, etc, etc... Rinse and repeat.
